Photographs with RAWor JPEG?

Most of the DSLR can shoot by RAW and JPeG files. What is RAW format? What is the difference between RAW with JPEG? What are theyr good and bad ? We should store photos of RAW or JPEG to ? Let’s think about it!

1>What is RAW format?

RAW format— is an original file which is not subject to any image processing. It can record the information captured completely. Information is not lost because of the image processing (such as sharp, increase color contrast), and compression. But you need to open these files by using some special software.

2>Advantage in shooting  by RAW format.

Professional photographer commonly used RAW format. It is  because it can save the information completely. It will also allows users to carry out post-production significantly.Just like: adjust white balance, exposure level, color contrast settings. Is also suitable for particularly novice to remedy the failure of photos taken. No matter what the change in post-production, the photos can be restored to original state in good condition. We will not lose those photos because of accidents saved.

Another advantage of RAW format is For example, Canon DPP software can correct the loss of optical lens, variant and so on.


3>What are advantages of JPEG?
JPEG is a very popular photo formats. Almost all digital cameras can use this format. Most computers can open the JPEG file. Users can adjust the degree of compression at any time(JPG best quality is very close with the RAW), is a very convenient format.

4>Disadvantages of RAW format:

a.RAW files retain all the details and information, so the file size will much larger than JPEG. Time to store or transfer photos to your computer will be longer and longer, need to have more storage capacity.

b.RAW files must open by special software . The computer can not open without the installation software.
c. If you can not open the software in after years, the photos you taken before would not be able to open again.
d. Spend more time to open the RAW files , about 8-9 seconds,or  seconds ,too.
e. different software have different ways to “interpretation ” the RAW files, so a RAW file in photoshop and Nikon Capture NX may be different.
f. the prices  of proprietary software vendor are not low.

5>When will you choose RAW or JPEG?

a. If you need to take a lot of photos, you should consider the use of JPEG. It is  because JPEG is relatively small capacity needs.
b. If you shoot for commercial filming ,wedding photography, single shot, outdoor or indoor shooting , you should use RAW format.So that,the post-production space will increases.
c. During the trip, we prefer to use RAW or RAW + JPG. That is, in some cases using only JPEG, and sometimes we use RAW format especially the beautiful scenery and performances. RAW format  allows you to have a greater opportunity to remedy once the shooting failed.
